Research Units of the German Research Foundation (DFG) serve the medium-term (up to eight years) close collaboration between several outstanding scientists on a common research question. The aim is to achieve results that go well beyond individual funding and can only be achieved together. Research groups can be based at a university or distributed across locations. They often help to establish new fields of research.
