Certificate, diploma and award of the doctoral degree
The certificate will be deposited in Docfile D-Akte as soon as possible after the disputation has been passed. However, this does not permit the use of the doctoral degree.
If necessary, the doctoral office can certify the completion of the doctoral examination after receipt of the disputation protocol.
The doctoral degree is awarded by handing over the diploma. Prior to this, the dissertation must be published.
The authorization to temporarily bear the doctoral degree is an exception.
Authorization to temporarily bear the doctoral degree
If there is an important reason that prevents the publication of the dissertation according to §13 paragraph 3 of the doctoral regulations of 12.3.2020, you can apply to be authorized to temporarily bear the doctoral degree. For the application please deposit an informal letter with justification why the dissertation cannot yet be published. This letter must be co-signed by the supervisor. Please upload the letter as PDF-file in Docfile D-file documents and inform the doctoral office about it.
If the doctoral degree committee agrees, you will receive a temporary authorization to bear the doctoral degree for a period of 2 years. You are obliged to publish the dissertation before the expiry of the validity of the temporary authorization to bear the degree. Upon justified request, the deadline can be extended (up to three times) by one additional year each time. The dissertation must be published no later than 5 years after the disputation.
Notice on certificate collection
If you are unable to collect your certificate in person, it can be sent within Germany in exceptional cases. Alternatively, an authorized person may collect it on your behalf with a written letter of authorization.
Loss of the certificate or diploma
In exceptional cases, a duplicate certificate or diploma may be issued in the event of loss. Please apply for the duplicate through the Doctoral Office, stating the relevant reasons and specifying department.
