Network Project ‚Women in STEM’

‘Women in STEM’ (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) is a project to setup and maintain a network of female scientists at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Cologne. The overall goal is to increase the number of women in leading positions and thus strengthen the influence of STEM women in science and in society as a whole.

The project activities mainly target female (junior) scientists doing a doctorate or in the first years after their PhD as this phase is recognized to be the most critical in terms of career development. Actually, about 160 female junior scientists and professors of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences belong to the network ‘Women in STEM’ (in German: ‘MINT-Frauen’).

The meetings offer presentations by well-known STEM experts as well as reports of female role models on their career paths. Most importantly, it provide a platform for the informal communication across disciplines and hierarchies. Issues include possible careers inside or outside of university, a healthy work-life balance in STEM fields, dealing with doubts and constraints and, of course, networking between participants.
