BSc Students of the Quantitative Biology Program Pitch Business Innovations

The BSc program in Quantitative Biology combines mathematical modeling, data science, and complex biological systems, training students to analyze living networks through a quantitative lens. At the closure event of the Microbial Ecology course that is part of their program they put this knowledge into practice by stepping into science-driven entrepreneurship. In an energetic poster-pitch showcase, six diverse student teams presented business concepts grounded in core biological principles to tackle pressing societal challenges, including several aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Evaluating the presentations from a science-to-business perspective, the judging panel was thoroughly impressed by the cohort’s preparation, technical feasibility, and clear grasp of user needs.

The winning teams showcased remarkable creativity and market awareness. Taking first place, MuHub presented a citizen science app that reduces screen time while leveraging idle smartphone processing power to model complex microbial interactions for industries like cheesemaking. Second-place winner FloraScalp pitched a holistic approach and working prototype to restore the native scalp microbiome rather than temporarily masking irritation. Other standout pitches included DeepAtlas for soil modeling under climate change, a precision diagnostic tool for periodontal dysbiosis to flag early cardiovascular and brain health risks, SkinSense for targeted acne care, and a biological carbon capture concept for data centers. Together, these projects highlight how the next generation of quantitative biologists can translate deep science into viable innovations.
